Originally part of Wallingford, Cheshire, CT was settled in 1694, known as New Cheshire Parish, becoming an independent town in 1780. Recognized as the best place to live in Connecticut and ranked 44th on Money Magazine’s list of best places to live in America, Fairfield, CT was one of two principal settlements of the Connecticut Colony in southwestern Connecticut. As the settlement grew, several towns (Redding, Weston, Easton, Bridgeport, and Westport) broke off and formed independent communities.

Though most of the colonists in their section of the colony were Tory sympathizers, those in Fairfield supported the cause for independence early in the Revolutionary War, which led to the burning of Fairfield in 1779. Our community remained primarily agrarian until after World War I as the large munitions industry in nearby Bridgeport began to boom and workers built their homes in Fairfield.

Bigelow Tea Company and Sturm, Ruger & Co. firearms have their headquarters in our community, providing employment to our residents along with Fairfield University and Sacred Heart University. A wealth of recreational opportunities are also available in our community, which features five public beaches on the five-mile stretch of our Long Island Sound Coastline, the South Benson Marina and Ye Yacht Yard, Lake Mohegan, and the Cascades waterfalls, and a variety of sports activities at the SportsPlex.
